Visa Guide for SA Students Going Abroad

The honest truth about visas with an SA passport — what you actually need, what it costs, and which destinations are easiest to get into.

Honest heads-up: SA passport holders need visas for most popular destinations

Unlike EU or US passports, the South African passport has limited visa-free access. For most internship destinations — EU, UK, USA — you will need to apply for a visa. The good news: these visas are obtainable, the process is manageable, and we guide you through it. Start early (4-6 months before your intended start date).

Apply through UAE ICP portal or via airlines like Emirates or Air Arabia. For longer internships (3+ months), employer-sponsored residency visas are available. Dubai is our recommended first internship destination for SA students — relatively easy logistics.

Barcelona / EU — Schengen Visa (Type C)

Covers all Schengen area countries (Spain, France, Germany, Netherlands, etc.). More paperwork but very achievable.

For internships longer than 90 days, a Spanish National Visa (long-stay) is needed — apply at the Spanish consulate in Johannesburg or Cape Town. Documents needed: confirmed internship letter, proof of accommodation, bank statements (approx. R25,000 minimum balance), travel insurance. We help you prepare the full package.

London (UK) — Standard Visitor / Graduate Visa

At VFS Global SA

For paid work in the UK, a Skilled Worker visa or Graduate visa (if applicable) is needed. SA passport holders do not currently qualify for the UK Youth Mobility Scheme. Apply through UKVI online, biometrics at VFS Global in Johannesburg or Cape Town.

Bali (Indonesia) — Visa on Arrival

One of the easiest entry processes for SA students. Pay at the airport.

R620 (35 USD)
Visa on Arrival

30 days, extendable once for another 30 days. For longer stays (3+ months): apply for a Social Cultural Visa (B211A) or KITAS work permit through the employer. Bali is extremely popular for SA students — low cost of living makes it very affordable compared to Jo'burg.

New York (USA) — J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa

The J-1 is the standard path for international internships in the USA. Longest lead time.

R4,000–R7,000
All-in estimate
3–4 months
Total lead time

Sponsor needed
US-accredited org

Requires a US State Department-accredited sponsor organisation. We work with sponsor partners for J-1 placements. Plan at least 4 months ahead. The USA is very achievable for SA students despite the complexity — the career boost is significant.
